Abstract

This study aims to explore and assess the efficiency of freemium business models, using Duolingo as a compelling case study. By delving into the intricacies of its strategies, and gaining valuable insights into the factors driving the consumer's decision-making process and the conversion from free to paying users, as well as highlight the aspects that differentiate Duolingo from its competitors and other businesses with similar models. Through a quantitative research methodology, an online questionnaire was implemented and answered by 80 participants in total, both current and past users of the app, with the goal to shed light on the nuances of freemium dynamics and their impact on user acquisition, retention, and revenue generation. The findings show that the even though most people are not familiar with the concept of freemium businesses, it is a part of their daily lives. These models can be extremely efficient and profitable, depending on the customer retention strategies and the value given away in the basic, free versions of the product.
