Towards Responsible Marine Aquaculture
Abstract
Marine aquaculture, as a key sector for blue growth, plays a crucial role in the economic development of marine resources. Integrating sustainable practices into this activity is becoming an imperative to preserve marine ecosystems while meeting the growing demand and consumption of aquatic products. This approach aims to align aquaculture with the PCI of sustainability by optimising the use of marine resources, minimising environmental impacts, and supporting blue communities. The blue economy, based on the sustainable use of oceans, seas, offers a framework that integrates both the preservation of marine biodiversity and economic innovation. The challenges are numerous: reducing carbon emissions, avoiding overexploitation of resources, and guaranteeing economic development that benefits coastal populations while preserving the health of the oceans. However, innovative solutions, such as closed-circuit aquaculture techniques, integrated marine culture, and research into sustainable genetics, are opening up promising prospects for reconciling productivity and sustainability.
