The Future of Language Learning
Abstract
This chapter explores the transformative potential of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in mobile language education, arguing that these technologies address critical gaps in situational learning and cognitive load management. Drawing on theories of multimedia cognition and situated learning, it examines how AR/VR environments replicate authentic language contexts while optimizing mental engagement. The chapter analyzes current applications across formal education (e.g., classroom integration) and self-directed informal learning (e.g., gamified apps), highlighting their distinct advantages. Findings reveal that AR/VR not only enhances vocabulary retention and conversational fluency but also reduces learner anxiety through immersive, low-stakes practice. However, challenges like accessibility and teacher training persist. By synthesizing empirical evidence and practical implementations, this chapter underscores AR/VR's role in democratizing language acquisition and proposes frameworks for scalable adoption.
