Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging as a transformative force in the global response to climate change. This chapter explores the multifaceted role of AI across three critical dimensions: prediction, mitigation, and environmental resilience. It examines how machine learning and data-driven modeling enhance the accuracy of climate forecasts, facilitate real-time environmental monitoring, and support early warning systems for extreme weather events. The chapter also delves into AI's contributions to climate mitigation, including optimizing renewable energy systems, advancing carbon capture strategies, and enabling sustainable agriculture and urban design. AI is being used to prepare for disasters, preserve different species and build infrastructure suitable for climate change. Semiconductor technologies and smart energy systems are highlighted for their importance in supporting large-scale, environmentally friendly AI projects. Questions about AI's effect on nature, problems of data inequality and the visibility of algorithms are studied.
