Abstract

Motivation is critical to students' success in online learning. This chapter examines how motivation influences engagement and goal attainment in challenging academic contexts and how educators can foster supportive online environments. Key frameworks, including Expectancy-Value Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Goal-Setting Theory, the Motivational Technology Model, and the Online Learning Technology Engagement Model (OLTEM), highlight the roles of task value, autonomy, competence, relatedness, self-efficacy, SMART goals, and technology in sustaining motivation. Integrating these theories provides practical strategies and real-world examples to enhance learner engagement, persistence, and success in digital learning contexts.
