Abstract

Isolation is a problem many students experience when attending higher education classes online. This chapter introduces the psychology of isolation in online learning, outlining the impact it can have on students attending online classes. The introduction of online student isolation stems from theoretical frameworks that supply potential theories as to why and how isolation occurs. This chapter also explores tools to aid in the issue of isolation and loneliness students might feel while attending college classes online and provides a focus on teacher engagement and presence within the classroom. Important factors such as first-generation learners, peer support systems, and mental health resources are also discussed.
