Abstract

This chapter investigates self-handicapping in online higher education as a psychological barrier that undermines academic performance, motivation, and well-being. It examines how self-handicapping behaviors—such as procrastination and avoidance—are influenced by low academic self-concept and fear of failure. The chapter introduces self-compassion and academic self-concept as key constructs that can mitigate these behaviors. Supported by theoretical models and empirical research, it presents an integrative framework explaining the interaction among these constructs. Practical strategies for educators, course designers, and institutions are provided, aiming to foster psychological safety, resilience, and academic success in digital learning environments.
