Abstract

This chapter examines strategies to enhance peer connections and instructor presence in online learning environments, addressing issues of student engagement, emotional intelligence, and community building. It emphasizes the importance of creating a sense of belonging, fostering psychological safety, and utilizing flexible communication methods, such as video feedback and informal drop-in sessions, to facilitate meaningful interactions between instructors and students. The role of peer mentoring and collaborative activities is highlighted as effective methods to bridge gaps in student participation and motivation, particularly amid the challenges posed by varying levels of technological proficiency. The integration of inclusive teaching practices and ongoing support for both faculty and students is imperative in creating environments that nurture collaboration, engagement, and ultimately, successful learning outcomes. Overall, by adopting these strategies, educators can significantly enhance the online learning experience, making it more inclusive and connected.
