Abstract

In recent years, the rise of various enabling factors has propelled the growth of e-commerce in India. It undoubtedly acts as a significant catalyst for India's economic development. Nevertheless, the various externalities linked to the growth of e-commerce enterprises, along with the ongoing environmental issues, prompt an inquiry into whether e-commerce aids in fostering a sustainable environment in India. To address this, the present study analysed monthly data of India from July 2016 to April 2025 and employed various economic methodologies to investigate the impact of e-commerce on the sustainable environment in India. The findings from the VECM indicated that the growth of e-commerce negatively impacts India's sustainable environment by increasing CO2 levels. Therefore, it is evident that while e-commerce contributes to economic growth, its current path is not environmentally sustainable in the India. The findings of this study call on policymakers to develop strategies that foster sustainable practices in e-commerce businesses and ensure a sustainable environment in India.
