Abstract

Over the past few years, e-commerce has transformed the consumption behaviours around the world, yet its fast development has also caused severe environmental destruction, loss of resources, and accumulation of waste. This chapter discusses the ways of implementing the concepts of the circular economy into the e-commerce systems as a socially responsible route to achieving sustainability. It explores business models that encourage product reuse, recycling and refurbishment and examines how digital platforms can lead to circularity and be economically inclusive and environmentally responsible. The chapter presents best practices and challenges in implementing circular strategies in different socio-economic contexts through case studies in India, Malaysia and Germany. It is highlighted how technological advances, namely blockchain, AI can build transparent, efficient, and cleaner e-commerce environments.
