Abstract

The accelerating growth of e-commerce has amplified environmental and ethical challenges associated with digital consumption, calling for urgent re-evaluation of how consumer choices are shaped in the virtual marketplaces. This chapter explores the transformative potential of green algorithms—computational systems which is consciously designed to integrate sustainability principles into consumer decision-making pathways. By synthesizing the theoretical perspectives from an Experience Economy, behavioral economics, digital nudging, and ecological informatics, this chapter focuses on a comprehensive framework for embedding sustainability into algorithmic architecture, drawing on real-world applications, ethical design practices, and strategic interventions such as green defaults, carbon labeling, and eco-incentive gamification. Ultimately, this chapter advocates for a paradigm shift in which digital commerce evolves into a catalyst for environmental stewardship, guided by intentional, transparent, and ethically grounded algorithmic systems.
