Abstract

Polyphenols, are a diverse group of plant-derived compounds found in various foods and beverages such as fruits, berries, legumes, tea and red wine. These compounds exhibit complex structures and are known for their potent bioactive properties. Among polyphenols, flavonoids are the most abundant and have demonstrated significant therapeutic potential, especially in combating neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's diseases and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The increasing prevalence of NNDs due to aging populations underscores the urgency of exploring effective treatments. Flavonoids exert neuroprotective effects through multiple mechanisms. These involve antioxidant activity, modulation of neuroinflammation, inhibition of protein aggregation, and mitigation of endoplasmic reticulum stress. They also influence the microbe-gut-brain axis and have shown promise in enhancing cognitive function and memory.
