Abstract

Nigeria like several other countries, has adopted inclusive education as preferred education placement option for all school children regardless of abilities, disabilities, faith, ethnicity or gender. The deaf schoolchil is therefore a key participant in Nigerian inclusive education initiative. To ensure that the process of enrolling, teaching, evaluating and relating with deaf learners mainstreamed into inclusive schools are well guided and goal oriented, there must be some well thought-through policy guidelines for the implementation of the inclusive deaf education. This chapter therefore presents some fundamentals to meaningful implementation of inclusive deaf education in Nigeria. They include Nigerian perceptions of deafness as a disability, how deafness impairs speech communication and demean the human values of the deaf, societal prejudices against the deaf, deaf education transiting phase, imperative of inclusive deaf education policy, inclusive deaf education policy Formulation and guidelines.
