Abstract

This chapter explores benefits and limitations of using artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation of an Immersive Case Study Environment (ICSE) that supports case study and simulation-based learning across the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of social work practice. It details the planning and collaboration process between an instructional designer and faculty, ethical considerations, pilot applications in various learning formats, early findings, and recommendations for future teaching and research. Key findings from this work include (1) an increased faculty awareness of how immersive case study experiences can lead to customized learning various environments, (2) ways students benefit from a more holistic view of clients and the community, and (3) the need for strategic planning around the adoption of new technology. Ultimately, the use of AI in collaboration with an instructional designer and faculty increased the accessibility of scenario-based learning for resource-limited institutions and provides a more authentic experience aligned with desired learning outcomes.
