Abstract

The study delves on the antecedents of sustainable vehicle adoption (electric and hybrid cars) in Spain. Employing the Comprehensive Action Determination Model (CADM) as a theoretical framework, it accounts for four types of psychosocial factors, such as intentional variables, normative influences, situational variables, and habitual behaviour. Additionally, sociodemographic factors and pro-environmental behaviours considered to obtain a more complete profile of the owner. After analysing the data from 358 individuals, the results demonstrate that the CADM model effectively explains the adoption of sustainable cars, indicating that intention and perceived behavioural control are the primary determinants of sustainable car adoption. Additionally, significant differences among (non)owners are observed across sociodemographic, psychographic, and behavioural factors. Implications and practical recommendations are provided, emphasising the necessity for policies and initiatives to address psychosocial barriers and facilitate transition towards environmentally sustainable mobility.
