Using Trauma-Informed Strategies for Relationship Building to Support Teachers
Abstract
This chapter examines the role of community and relationship building in schools during times of transition and challenge through a trauma-informed lens. It highlights how trauma-informed practices can strengthen trust, enhance belonging, and impact both teacher confidence and student outcomes. The chapter explores the ways educators have adapted to shifting demands, recognizing the prevalence of trauma and the persistent challenges it creates in the classroom. By focusing on what is within their control—such as daily interactions, language use, and intentional relationship-building—teachers can create safe, supportive environments that nurture student well-being and academic gains. In addition, the chapter underscores the importance of community among staff and the role of school leadership in providing collaboration and reflection. Ultimately, the author demonstrates how prioritizing relationships and connection can empower educators and cultivate more positive school communities in times of ongoing transition.
