Abstract

Cyber threats and attacks targeting industrial IoT require a flexible but scalable tool that allows the industry and research community to safeguard, improve security posture, and address cybersecurity compliance. The nature of today's attacks landscape respects no boundaries. Hence, the importance of cybersecurity testbeds is to facilitate security testing, vulnerability assessment, threat detection, education, and research. This paper presents a review of cybersecurity testbeds, Industrial IoT security goals, and challenges. The paper demonstrates the importance of cybersecurity testbeds in the field of cybersecurity, especially virtual cybersecurity testbeds. It was observed that the rapid development of the software industry to simulate various industrial components will continue to influence the application of virtual cybersecurity testbeds. Likewise, the quick adaptability of virtual cybersecurity testbeds would help cybersecurity practitioners and researchers to assess and mitigate risks to industrial systems while ensuring cyber preparedness and readiness. This paper provides insight and guidelines that may be used during the planning and designing of virtual cybersecurity testbeds.
