Abstract

This book chapter aims to evaluate the political economy of the Saudi Arabia's regional role in the Middle East and Africa. As we will argue Saudi Arabia's strategy in the Middle East region, reflects a complex mix of hegemony, leadership, and at times predation, depending on its relationship with the respective state. This strategy embodies a combination of neo-imperialism, neo-mercantilism, hegemony, and institutional liberalism. Saudi Arabia exhibits different strategic approaches based on the strength and vulnerability of its neighboring countries and its objectives in achieving and maintaining regional dominance.
