A Conceptual Proposal for an Educational Video Game to Explore Polymer Structure-Property Relationships
Abstract
This chapter presents a conceptual proposal for an educational video game, Macromolecules in Play, designed to connect polymer structures and their material properties. Instead of learning through static formulas, players apply polymer properties—such as adhesion, thermal resistance, and elasticity—to navigate challenges. Each gameplay choice is directly linked to molecular principles; for example, players learn that increasing crosslinking enhances thermal stability but reduces flexibility. The game's design emphasizes the critical concept of “trade-offs,” compelling players to balance competing properties for optimal solutions. By embedding these concepts into interactive mechanics, abstract chemical knowledge becomes a tangible experience. Grounded in research on gamification, this work illustrates how interactive tools can enrich teaching in chemistry, materials science, and engineering.
