Abstract

Virtual reality is increasingly being incorporated into the field of medical training. The Mexican Social Security Institute is recognized for training personnel in various specialties; in this case, the focus is on the development of surgical clinical skills that medical residents at Regional Hospital 45 must acquire. Within this context, attending physicians have shown interest in incorporating virtual reality into the residents' learning process. On a daily basis, residents often share how their own motivation drives them to integrate information they have encountered across different technology-mediated platforms. Virtual reality is examined here as a tool which, from a collaborative perspective, contributes to surgical clinical training. The emphasis is placed on integrating three equally important components: the pedagogical, the technological, and the patient-centered orientation.
