Plant Viral Diseases
Abstract
Plant viral diseases are a major challenge to global agriculture, causing yield losses, poor crop quality, and food supply disruptions. Their management is difficult since viruses lack independent metabolism, limiting control to preventive measures. Traditional strategies—resistant cultivars, cultural practices, and vector control—often fail due to viral diversity, rapid evolution, and climate-driven spread. Globalization further accelerates cross-border transmission. The economic toll includes reduced productivity, trade restrictions, and heavy burdens on smallholder farmers. Innovative solutions such as molecular breeding, genome editing, RNAi, integrated vector control, and nanotechnology offer promise, though they need validation, regulation, and accessibility. Future progress depends on interdisciplinary collaboration to build sustainable, resilient, and equitable food systems against viral threats.
