Abstract

This chapter emphasises the importance of belonging and psychological safety in student engagement, especially within diverse and market-driven private higher education institutions. Drawing on student development theories and culturally sustaining pedagogy, it introduces the Belonging-Centred Engagement (BCE) framework, which integrates relational pedagogy, inclusive spaces, and participatory practices. Case studies from Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam illustrate strategies such as peer mentoring, student co-creation, and identity-affirming curricula. The chapter also addresses barriers, hierarchical culture, staff turnover, and limited pastoral systems, and offers institutional approaches to strengthening relational cultures. It argues that belonging must become an institutional priority for meaningful learning, retention, and holistic success.
