Curriculum by Design, Not Default
Abstract
This chapter argues that curriculum design in private higher education must prioritise deliberate, values-led processes over mere regulatory compliance or market demands. Drawing on curriculum theory, systems thinking, and Asian examples, it critiques inherited curricula, often colonial or imported, that emphasise narrow employability. The Curriculum Design Intentionality (CDI) framework guides institutions to define authentic graduate capabilities, align pedagogy with epistemological principles, incorporate interdisciplinarity, and embed values like sustainability, inclusion, and ethics. Case studies highlight redesign via faculty design studios, interdisciplinary collaboration, and student co-creation. Addressing barriers such as accreditation constraints, faculty resistance, and short-termism, the chapter proposes strategies for robust curriculum leadership. It frames curriculum as a pivotal lever for distinctive institutional identity, societal relevance, and transformative outcomes in dynamic Asian private higher education landscapes.
