Faculty as Educational Leaders
Abstract
This chapter repositions faculty in private higher education institutions as educational leaders who shape pedagogical innovation, institutional identity, and student experience. Drawing on distributed leadership and professional identity scholarship, it introduces the concept of micro-leadership, in which educators exercise influence through everyday teaching, mentoring, curriculum design, and community engagement. Case examples from Singapore, Malaysia, and China illustrate faculty-led improvements in assessment, well-being, and interdisciplinary teaching. The chapter also examines structural constraints, hierarchy, compliance burdens, and lack of tenure, and proposes frameworks for supporting faculty empowerment, including professional development, communities of practice, and leadership pathways. It argues that institutional transformation depends on cultivating leadership from the middle.
