Abstract

This chapter argues that private higher education institutions (PHEIs) in Asia must undergo a strategic shift from a compliance-driven approach to a future-oriented transformation. Drawing on contemporary scholarship in futures literacy, anticipatory governance, and networked institutional ecosystems, the chapter critiques the limitations of efficiency logic and hierarchical structures that currently dominate many PEIs. It proposes three interdependent shifts, cultivating anticipatory capacity, centring institutional purpose, and adopting adaptive networked governance, as foundations for long-term resilience. Through a synthesis of regional policy trends and global educational futures, the chapter positions Asian PEIs not as secondary actors but as potential pioneers of human-centred, sustainability-aligned higher education. Ultimately, it calls for courageous imagination, ethical leadership, and continuous learning as indispensable attributes for future-proofing private higher education.
