Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their impact on artificial intelligence. It covers: a). Historical development from statistical language modeling to modern autoregressive transformers. b). Evolution of language modeling techniques, including Word2Vec, GloVe, BERT, GPT, PaLM, LLaMA, and Gemini. c). Architectural innovations like sparse attention mechanisms, mixture-of-experts layers, and retrieval-augmented generation. d). Advancements in prompt engineering and fine-tuning methods. e). Multi-modal LLMs processing text, images, audio, video, and structured data. f). LLMs in low-resource and multilingual contexts, real-time inference, and edge/cloud computing. g). Model compression, quantization, and hardware-aware optimization. h). Applications in education and healthcare. i). Ethical considerations, governance challenges, and evaluation benchmarks. The chapter aims to be a comprehensive resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers working with LLMs.
