Abstract

This chapter presents an alternative to the scripted and rigid curricula and explores an asset-based teaching approach, culturally relevant teaching, that prioritizes students' strengths, interests, and cultural knowledge. It highlights the significance and need for teacher professional development in this area. Drawing on foundational research (Yosso, 2005; Gay, 2018), it critiques the limitations of scripted curricula and advocates for inclusive, culturally relevant practices that empower educators and improve diverse students' learning. The authors present educational theories and research evidence that support culturally relevant teaching and demonstrate how to apply it at the community, school, and program levels across subject disciplines. The teaching units provided serve as resources for teachers to improve their teaching effectiveness and their students' learning outcomes.
