Bridging the Gap
Abstract
Accessibility gaps in learning environments can cause various problems, especially in achieving the learning goals of individuals with special needs. At this point, immersive technologies such as augmented and virtual reality are technologies that have the potential to create accessible and equal environments for students with special needs and to compensate for accessibility problems. These technologies can provide special learning environments that meet the unique needs of individuals with sensory, cognitive and motor problems. Some of the advantages provided by immersive technologies include visual, auditory and tactile support, adaptive controllers, eye-tracking interfaces, voice command systems, real-time subtitles, and interactive learning environments enhanced with acceleration. Additionally, immersive environments can increase engagement, motivation, and skill acquisition for students with learning disabilities. In this context, this chapter examines the use of immersive technologies to address accessibility gaps in educational settings for individuals with disabilities.
