Designing Immersive Learning Experiences for Neurodiverse Learners
Abstract
Creating engaging learning experiences for students who think and learn differently requires a thoughtful and inclusive approach that combines new ideas with ensuring everyone can access them. This guide provides practical strategies for making educational technology effective for a diverse range of learning styles, sensory preferences, and communication needs, particularly for individuals with autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. By incorporating ideas from Universal Design for Learning, ethical data handling practices, and standards such as WCAG and ISO/IEC 24751, this guide enables teachers and technology designers to create learning environments that are engaging, adaptable, and equitable. Essential aspects of this design include managing the amount of sensory input provided, utilizing various methods to present information, allowing users to customize settings, and collaborating directly with students to tailor the experience to their individual needs.
