Safeguarding the Seas and Promoting a Sustainable Blue Economy Through Maritime Security
Abstract
This chapter explores the intersection of maritime security and the sustainable blue economy, emphasizing the critical role of secure seas in advancing ecological health, economic prosperity, and global stability. It highlights how maritime threats—ranging from piracy and smuggling to climate-driven risks and cyber vulnerabilities—undermine efforts to build resilient ocean economies. Drawing on regional case studies such as the Red Sea, Indo-Pacific, Arctic, and African maritime zones, the discussion underscores the interplay between security frameworks, governance mechanisms, and sustainable development. The chapter also examines the role of international law, regional cooperation, and technological innovation in mitigating risks. By linking security with sustainability, it argues that safeguarding maritime spaces is not only a matter of protecting trade routes and national interests but also a prerequisite for ensuring long-term ecological and economic resilience.
