Abstract

The transition from conventional, face-to-face connections to digitally mediated interactions has resulted in significant changes in social dynamics, psychological well-being, and the structure of interpersonal relationships. Paradoxically, the same technology supposed to improve connectedness has led to increased feelings of social isolation, emotional fragmentation, and decreased relational depth. Digital platforms frequently prioritize speed, convenience, and planned self-presentation above the spontaneous, context-rich engagement that distinguishes physical encounters, resulting in exchanges that are frequent but affectively shallow. As a result, people may feel “digitally disconnected,” in which they have a constant online presence but lack social support, empathy, and a sense of true belonging. This chapter critically investigates these conflicts by looking at how digital communication practices generate modern feelings of isolation, the psychological implications of mediated contact, and the larger societal ramifications of more filtered and fragmented ways of connection.
