Abstract

This chapter interrogates the emergent phenomenon of hashtag citizenship as a transformative force in civic learning, youth political agency, and democratic participation. In an era where digital platforms mediate expressions of identity, resistance, and solidarity, traditional models of civic education rooted in institutional memorization and deliberative rationality appear increasingly obsolete. Drawing on interdisciplinary frameworks from political science, media studies, education, and critical theory, the chapter argues for a radical reconfiguration of civic pedagogy to reflect digitally networked realities. It advocates for curricular reforms, teacher training, platform accountability, and decolonized pedagogical practices that recognize youth as epistemic agents and co-constructors of public meaning. By bridging informal digital activism and formal education, it calls for a justice-oriented, participatory, and future-facing vision of civic education that treats hashtag activism not as disruption but as democratic practice in motion.
