Modeling and Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems Based on Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators
Abstract
This chapter presents a comprehensive modeling and control framework for a grid-connected wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The proposed system integrates aerodynamic and electromechanical models, including wind profile, turbine, shaft dynamics, PMSG, and full-scale back-to-back converters. A Tip Speed Ratio (TSR)-based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) method is implemented to ensure optimal energy extraction, while pitch angle control maintains rated power under high wind conditions. Vector control is applied to both machine-side and grid-side converters to regulate torque, flux, DC-link voltage, and manage active/reactive power injection into the grid. A Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) ensures synchronization. MATLAB/Simulink simulations validate the system's performance, demonstrating efficient tracking of the optimal operating point, stable dynamics, and enhanced energy efficiency. This work offers a solid basis for intelligent control in modern wind turbine systems.
