Clarity, Say-ability, and Memorability
Abstract
This chapter examines the ability names of Dota 2, adopting qualitative and multimodal case study methods to analyze their operational mechanisms regarding interface layout, gameplay functions, and player communication. It highlights the dual constraints of interface spatial limits and voice communication dynamics on naming choices. The study summarizes three localization strategies with minimalist, function-oriented, and style-elevating, and argues that effective localization depends on context-specific, dynamic trade-offs among clarity, sayability, and memorability rather than a single optimal strategy. Finally, it proposes a transferable analytical framework for naming in competitive gaming.
