Abstract

Smart marine systems represent a transformative paradigm in ocean observation, management, and conservation by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures, artificial intelligence, and autonomous platforms. This chapter examines the foundational principles, enabling technologies, and system architectures that underpin these emerging capabilities. It highlights how distributed sensing networks, machine learning–driven analytics, and autonomous surface and underwater vehicles synergistically enhance real-time environmental awareness, operational efficiency, and decision support across diverse maritime contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on interoperability, data standardisation, cyber-physical coordination, and energy-efficient system design as prerequisites for scalable and resilient marine intelligence frameworks. The chapter also considers ethical, regulatory, and sustainability implications, emphasising the importance of responsible innovation to ensure that smart marine systems contribute effectively to long-term ocean stewardship and global sustainability goals.
