Abstract

This chapter explores six innovative uses of AI in underwater settings, showcasing the technology's potential to solve pressing ocean issues. We start by looking at AI systems for managing marine pollution, such as models for predicting oil spills and algorithms for detecting plastic. Second, we look into machine learning methods for restoring coral reefs, with an emphasis on drone-assisted mapping and bleaching prediction. Third, we examine AI-enhanced autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for data collecting and deep-sea research. Fourth, we introduce predictive modelling techniques for managing fisheries sustainably, such as stock evaluation and satellite imagery-based illicit fishing detection. Fifth, we use advanced wave analysis to assess AI-powered coastal protection systems for flood risk and erosion monitoring. Lastly, we demonstrate computer vision methods for biodiversity monitoring by investigating deep learning applications for marine species identification. These applications highlight AI's growing role in ocean conservation, resource management, and climate resilience
