Abstract

This present study focuses on gamification for stimulating citizen participation in smart city governance. The findings suggest that from existing literature and real-world practices together, best practices comprising normative ground rules have been set and left as guidelines for cities to develop gamifying systems that are able to drive, facilitate, and focus on equity and do so ethically. Advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital twin, VR/AR and block-chain have also been suggested as future enablers for next generation of gamified governance. The chapter argues that, as a governance-led approach to citizen engagement, it could be used to drive the development of more sustainable, participatory and forward-thinking smart cities, with gamification framing the scene in which practices of gamification should occur and intentions of transparency, inclusivity and accountability could be seen.
