Abstract

As urban populations grow and environmental challenges intensify, cities must adopt innovative strategies to influence and sustain eco-conscious behaviors among citizens. This chapter explores the transformative potential of gamification in promoting sustainable urban lifestyles, offering a multidisciplinary examination of how game-based systems can be designed to incentivize behavioral change in areas such as transportation, energy use, waste management, water conservation, and public space engagement. The chapter analyzes case studies from smart cities around the world, illustrating successful applications of gamified interventions such as rewards programs, eco-leaderboards, and mobile apps that track and nudge user behavior. By providing frameworks for implementation and metrics for impact assessment, this chapter serves urban planners, policymakers, designers, and researchers aiming to embed playful innovation into urban sustainability strategies
