Abstract

Access to software systems is now a fundamental necessity for engagement in contemporary education, work, communication, healthcare, and civic life in a society that is becoming more and more digitalized. However, digital access continues to be a major obstacle for people with disabilities and those who are neurodivergent. A large portion of the digital ecosystem still excludes or fails to adequately serve people with a variety of cognitive, sensory, and physical needs, despite advancements in web and software standards and the global push for adherence to accessibility laws. The need for a paradigm change toward inclusive, human-centered software development practices is highlighted by the shortcomings of compliance-focused frameworks.
