Implementation of Augmented Reality in Cranial Trauma Reconstruction
Abstract
Cranial trauma involving patients with depressed skull fractures and complex craniofacial injuries has not lost its status of very difficult surgical operations among neurosurgery and reconstruction. In spite of the introduction of sophisticated imaging and 3D printing, the intra-operative accuracy and anatomical fidelity challenge is still existing. The paper discusses the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) in the field of cranial trauma reconstruction and points out the uses of AR in surgical visualization, precision implant, and workflow efficiency. Clinical trials, technical reports, and experimental studies on AR with 3D-printed PEEK implants, neuronavigation, and AI-assisted modeling were systematically collected from the Google Scholar database over a period of five years from 2019 to 2025.
