Abstract

This chapter explores digital literacy in early childhood education (ECE) as a vital 21st-century competency that includes creativity, critical thinking, cooperation, and ethical awareness. This study used an interpretive methos to analyse the relationship between digital literacy and child development, play-based learning, teacher preparedness, and curriculum design. Utilizing frameworks like UNESCO's Digital Literacy Global Framework and UNICEF's “Growing Up in a Digital World”, the study emphasizes that deliberate digital engagement fosters early cognitive and social development when directed by intentional pedagogy. It addresses concerns of equity, access, and ethical responsibility, while emphasizing the roles of educators as mediators and mentors in digital contexts. The discourse promotes culturally responsive, inclusive, and developmentally suitable digital ecosystems that empower educators, families, and communities. Digital literacy is ultimately presented as a transforming potential and a moral obligation for fostering responsible, creative, and empathic digital citizens.
