Abstract

Despite being the crucial resource centres of the nation capable of providing crucial and strategic resources, rural areas have largely been found struggling with a lack of advanced infrastructural facilities, strong communication networks, proper information systems, and up-to-date technical assistance considered necessary for their sustainable growth and development. In light of these challenges and the continuing deteriorating state of rural areas, it becomes imperative to plan policies and strategies for sustainable rural development that would help foster balanced economic growth and environmental conservation. Of all the technological advancements, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as a strategic tool that combines geographic data with socio-economic and environmental information to provide a reliable and effective solution for logical and informed decision-making. This chapter takes forward this discussion to get deeper insights into GIS and its integration in sustainable rural planning and development.
