Abstract

Geospatial Information System (GIS) has come as a radical force in handling multidimensional sustainability issues within the environmental, social and economic spheres. GIS offers strong analytical to aid the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of evidence-based decisions in the countries that face the issues of climate change, increasing urbanization, resource depletion, and uneven socio-economic conditions. The role of GIS within sustainable development is considered in this chapter in an integrative manner in that it encompasses the theoretical background, empirical studies (2010-2025) and methodological aspects. It summarizes the developments in spatial analytics, remote sensing, machine learning integration, and geospatial big data management and clarifies the importance of the discussed approaches to land-use planning, disaster risk reduction, environmental conservation, renewable energy, and sustainable urban development.
