Abstract

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as a transformative tool for driving sustainable economic and regional development by providing spatially intelligent insights for data-driven decision-making. This chapter explores the integration of GIS technologies into policy formulation, planning, and practice to enhance sustainability outcomes. It emphasizes how spatial data analysis can support equitable resource allocation, monitor environmental changes, and guide infrastructure and land-use planning. Through case examples and best practices, the discussion highlights the role of GIS in promoting spatial justice, reducing regional disparities, and fostering resilient urban–rural linkages. The chapter also examines how GIS-based modeling and mapping can inform sustainable investments, disaster risk management, and community-based participatory planning. Ultimately, it advocates for embedding geospatial intelligence into governance frameworks to enable evidence-based regional strategies that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and social well-being.
