Abstract

Systematic literature reviews serve several critical functions in academic and professional research. Firstly, they help synthesize scattered and diverse research findings into a coherent narrative, identifying patterns, inconsistencies, gaps, and consensus within the literature. This is especially important in rapidly evolving fields, where knowledge is constantly expanding, and practitioners or scholars need a clear overview of current evidence. Secondly, SLRs promote evidence-based decision-making. In healthcare, for example, clinical guidelines and treatment protocols often rely on findings from systematic reviews because they provide the most reliable summaries of available evidence. In education, engineering, business, and environmental studies, systematic reviews help stakeholders make informed choices backed by empirical evidence rather than intuition or anecdote. Lastly, SLRs contribute to research quality and transparency. By documenting the review process—including how studies are searched, selected, and appraised—they allow for replication.
