Abstract

This chapter examines the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into translation and interpreting practices and evaluates its implications for ethics, quality, and professional accountability. Recent developments in neural machine translation and large language models have significantly expanded translation capabilities, enabling interactive and context-aware multilingual communication. However, the increasing reliance on AI-powered tools raises critical concerns regarding accuracy, bias, privacy, and the shifting role of human translators. Drawing on insights from applied linguistics, translation studies, and interpreting research, this chapter analyzes how AI reshapes translation workflows, professional competencies, and quality assessment practices. It further explores emerging governance frameworks, professional standards, and hybrid human–AI models designed to mitigate risk while preserving linguistic and cultural integrity. Ultimately, the chapter argues that responsible AI integration in translation requires interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical oversight, and human-centered accountability mechanisms to ensure that technological innovation supports rather than undermines communicative trust and social responsibility.
