Abstract

Artificial intelligence has become the new foundation of social structure. It is reshaping the social institutions, existing relationships and opportunities. The chapter explains AI as a sociotechnical tool as well as a system which shows the values, biases and power dynamics of society in which it is developed. Though it does have a risk of increasing the existing social inequalities, be it gender, caste or class-based, it does have potential to transform the system of governance, healthcare, agriculture or even the present education system. The chapter is based on the theories of Weber, Sen, feminist and critical race theory perspectives. The chapter tries to explore how AI can help in promoting social justice, inclusion, along human dignity. It focuses on empowerment, ethical and participatory governance as essential pillars for a society having an equitable and humane digital future.
