AI Ethics and Techno-Ableism
Abstract
This study critically examines the concept of techno-ableism from the perspective of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which intentionally or unintentionally exclude individuals with disabilities and normalize discrimination. It is emphasized that the roots of techno-ableism lie in broader societal prejudices such as ableism, which views non-disabled individuals as superior and characterizes disability as a “flaw to be corrected.” The study focuses on criticisms of the term “assistive technology” and phenomena like the “Assistive Excuse,” demonstrating how the real needs of individuals with disabilities are marginalized and turned into a market commodity. In this context, the forms of techno-ableism in AI systems and their concrete impacts on the lives of individuals with disabilities have been analyzed. Finally, ethical frameworks and practical solutions focusing on responsible design and implementation approaches are presented to build a more inclusive future.
