Abstract

The rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems is revolutionizing global societies, heralding unprecedented opportunities for social advancement while simultaneously posing complex risks to fundamental human rights. This chapter investigates the dual nature of AI as both an enabler of human dignity and a potential threat to freedoms, situating the discussion within the broader framework of social justice. It explores ethical AI design principles embedding human rights by design, reviews emerging global governance and accountability frameworks, and advocates for inclusionary AI development practices that empower marginalized populations. Supported by case studies and interdisciplinary scholarship, the chapter provides actionable recommendations for stakeholders striving to ensure AI fosters equitable and rights-respecting futures.
