Abstract

Big data has evolved as a disruptive force in the digital age, altering how businesses acquire, store, and analyse data. Big data, defined by the “3Vs” of volume, variety, and velocity, has transformed database management systems (DBMS). Traditional DBMS, which were created for structured and constrained datasets, struggle to handle the massive, unstructured, and rapidly generated data of current applications. Hadoop, MapReduce, and NoSQL databases have addressed these difficulties by providing distributed, scalable, and fault-tolerant systems for big data management. Big data applications are found in a wide range of industries, including healthcare, education, logistics, and finance, and they drive innovation and efficiency. Despite its potential, data security, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure scalability remain major concerns. The future of DBMS is to fulfil the demands of a data-driven world by harnessing new technologies such as quantum computing and AI.
